Review Tomorrow the Green Grass / Jayhawks:At its best, listening to the Jayhawks make music is a beautiful American experience, falling somewhere between drinking a cold Coke on a hot day and driving through the Rocky Mountains at sunset. Perhaps it's in the clarity of Mark Olson's tenor melodies and their accompanying ghostly harmonies, or maybe it's in Gary Louris' immensely raved-up country rock. Or perhaps it's the impression left by lyrics that never reveal the whole story but just enough to tear at you and make you understand their raw emotions-the loneliness, the sorrow, the hope, and the peace. The Jayhawks were at their best on 1992's Hollywood Town Hall: their guitars were sharp, the words perfect and the melodies unforgettable. With Tomorrow the Green Grass, however, 1994's version of the great country soul group is still savoury if decidedly less filling. The addition of violins is a nice touch, but detracts slightly from the music's muscle. The guitars are still gorgeous, but muddier and less hook-laden. The lyrics still haunt, but they're more disjointed and less gripping this time around. And the melodies are both a blessing and a curse: more easily catching and chart-ready but with a lot less meat on their bones. Call it cosmic American music in the sugary Milky Way galaxy. Review Folklore / 16 Horsepower:Sixteen Horsepower are crusaders in the traditional and musical sense of the term, and Folklore is further proof of this. While much of what has been written about this extraordinary band has concentrated on the religious fervour of singer/songwriter David Eugene Edwards, Sixteen Horsepower's equally passionate zeal for the music that inspires them has been overlooked. This extraordinary band see themselves as heirs to two apparently contrary, but-Sixteen Horsepower believe-spiritually akin lineages: old-school American folk and New Wave punk rock. On their previous albums, they've started acknowledging some of these influences, covering Bob Dylan's "'Cept You", Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" and Gun Club's "Fire Spirit", among others. Folklore is also, in part, a work of homage, containing typically ferocious readings of Hank Williams' "Alone and Forsaken" and the Carter Family's "Single Girl", as well as a selection of traditional songs-all of which sound here like they've always been Sixteen Horsepower songs. Folklore also contains four new Sixteen Horsepower originals, which demonstrate that their capacity for making banjos and violins sound like the onset of the apocalypse remains undimmed. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Incantation / Tim Wheater:Wheater's gentle music has long been a favorite of massage therapists, by whom he is appreciated as a sound healer and facilitator of sound workshops at New York's Omega and California's Esalen. A renowned flautist of considerable articulation, Tim Wheater studied flute with the magnificent master James Galway, who made the flute hip even for scrappy street kids. Wheater has also collaborated with noted spiritual creativity writer Julia Cameron (The Artist's Way, Vein of Gold) on a number of audio projects, including This Earth and the 1999 coauthored Soundtracks. Here on Incantation Wheater's considerable talents are evident, yet muddied by the attempt to do too much-Celtic, native, Tibetan, aboriginal and pagan New Age-all at once. A fine exception to such distraction is the "Circle's Edge," on which the keyboards pull back from the monastic choir-like vocals, blending beautifully with Wheaton's flute and the "Om mani Padme hum" chant. -Paige La Grone.

Review The Thorns [Special Edition] / Thorns:If ever a group's name were wrapped in florid irony, it's surely that of the Thorns. The Thorns is a bright, buoyant summit meeting of contemporary popmeisters Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge. Backed by an all-star studio ensemble that includes Jim Keltner, Greg Leisz, Brendan O'Brien and Roy Bittan, the three nominally insulated musicians do more than claim the legacy of Crosby, Stills & Nash on the harmonic riches of "Think It Over" and the glorious "Now I Know". (It's equally hard to imagine the baby-boom icons wrapping themselves around the chunky funk of the title track here or the pointed impressionistic allegory of "Dragonfly". ) They also find a musical common ground that can't help but echo history in its folk-rooted vocal glories yet forges an ego-sublimating higher ground that's anything but nostalgic. Fans of the three musicians may recognise their various sensibilities at work throughout, but this is a rewarding collaboration that virtually defies deconstruction. Don't be misled by the name-this is a beautiful, accessible, musically fragrant bouquet. -Jerry McCulley.
