Review Elgar: Violin Concerto/Cello Concerto/Dream Children / Pearl:This reissue of recordings made in 1929 is of far more than historical interest. Elgar's violin concerto has always been somewhat overshadowed by the cello concerto, and it is indeed less concisely constructed; the finale especially is a bit long. However, bringing them together highlights their different characteristics and proves that both are masterpieces in their own way. Moreover, the soloists were Elgar's friends who had played these works under his baton, so it is difficult to imagine performances more authentic or closer to the composer's intentions. Sound and balance are remarkably good and the playing is splendid. Squire (8171-1963) is a fine cellist; his tone is slightly constricted, but his style is austere, sombre, noble, inward, deeply expressive and never sentimental, though in keeping with the fashion as well as the instrumental limitations of his day, he slides incessantly and very slowly. Sammons (1886-1957), perhaps the greatest English violinist of his time, has a brilliant technique and a wonderfully rich, warm, radiant, expressive tone; his playing is intense, ardent, impetuous, soaring, noble, elegant, flexible, sometimes almost improvisatory. Unlike Squire's, his slides are not dictated by necessity but judiciously chosen and executed with utmost finesse. The two orchestras accompany with care and empathy and play beautifully. -Edith Eisler.
