Beluga begins with the sounds of whales communicating in their high-pitch squeaks (which presented here come across as cute and sweet) and features melodic lines that evoke vivid pictures of gentle waves and a frolicking whale. An illustrated sing-along book that is published separately is a nice companion to this first track, giving young listeners visual images of the song's narrative. The rest of this varied album blends traditional songs like "Oats and Beans and Barley" and "This Old Man" with four original pieces by Raffi, including the instrumental "Water Dance. " Liner notes have the complete lyrics, a description and history of beluga whales, and explanations of Raffi's inspiration and ties to each song. Review Toot Toot! / The Wiggles:The Wiggles, that wacky Australian outfit wowing kids from Down Under, welcome pre-schoolers for a lively, loopy musical fiesta with Toot Toot. Chiming in on this 23-track charmer of a dance and sing-along are the usual wiggly suspects: Captain Feathersword relates how he loves to dance in his pirate pants on the spoken-word "Raincoat Story"; Henry the Octopus's "marvellous talent" for baking, roasting, and frying seaweed pies is celebrated on "Henry the Octopus", and his tireless tentacles also inspire the next get-you-moving tune, "Move Your Arms Like Henry". The gang drops in on Dorothy the Dinosaur on "Tell Me Who Is That Knocking?" Then rascally pup Wags gets down on "Wags the Dog, He Likes to Tango" (which, we're reminded, rhymes with mango). Mostly, this is silly, groove-along good fun, but the goofball foursome of Anthony, Murray, Greg, and Jeff also slip in a solidly educational number here and there: "Look Both Ways" drives home an important safety message for little pedestrians, and "John Bodlelum" and "I Climb Ten Stairs" reinforce recently acquired counting skills. As always, the Wiggles dish up a dose of Australianisms, but here they're easy to digest. Listening to "Food, Food, Food", curious kids who don't hail from Oz will want t know what paw paws and rockmelon are; chalk it up as a chance to turn a song they'll like into a foreign-culture learning experience, and keep on wiggling. -Tammy La Gorce.
