Though generally thought of as the king of music for the preschool set, Raffi has evolved from being strictly a little kid's performer to being a family entertainer, and it's evident in this 1995 release. More-sophisticated musical arrangements, a broader repertoire, greater vocal versatility, and intricate lyrics make this almost magical musical mix an album for every member of the family. Whether you're more fond of boppin' with "Shake a Toe," joining in a refrain on the bouncy title cut, or relishing in the poignancy of the gentle "Changing Garden of Mr. Bell" and the Native American tribute "First Peoples," there's enough variety here to appeal to a greater audience than Raffi may have enjoyed in the past. -Deborah Moore.

From bathtime and teddy bears to red birds and little white ducks, this Raffi album is filled with an enthusiastic spirit of fun! Kids can dance around the family room to the island sound of "Brown Girl in the Ring," break out the pots and pans to play along with "Let's Make Some Noise," and sing with a "Bathtime" chorus of "bu-bu-bu-bubbly bubbles. " Though Everything Grows has a stronger mix of Raffi-penned originals than previous albums, tunes like the title cut, "Teddy Bear Hug," and "Just Like the Sun" are excellent complements to better-known titles such as "Little White Duck" and the kid-friendly "Ha-Ha This-a-Way. Finally, a boy band with some substance: Australia's Wiggles, a four-bloke outfit complete with an entourage of costumed characters, several videos and their own TV show, ought to have no problem worming their way into the CD collections of two- to six-year-olds. Yummy Yummy, a 24-track album brimming with danceable, singable and sometimes nonsensical songs, is largely about food, numbers and animals. Most appealing about the group-Greg Page (lead vocalist and the Wiggle in yellow), Murray Cook (guitarist and red-shirted Wiggle), Anthony Field (another guitarist, but in blue) and Jeff Fatt (a purple-skivvied backing vocalist)-is its unabashed goofiness and pluck. In "Shake Your Sillies Out", for example, you get the feeling that, in a studio somewhere, these guys actually are shaking their sillies out, nodding their naughties out, clapping their crazies out, jumping their jiggles out and wibbling their wobbles away. "Fruit Salad", "Hot Potato" and "Crunchy Munchy Honey Cakes" also are recipes for fun. But not to worry-"The Monkey Dance", "Walk" and "Come On Let's Jump" eliminate the threat of food-induced listener lethargy. Aside from the songs themselves, another yummy-yummy aspect of this album (and their Let's Wiggle) is its track lengths. While the "Numbers Joke" lasts only 11 seconds, the instrumental "The Chase", the record's longest number, weighs in at four minutes-no demands are being made on short attention spans here. -Tammy La Gorce.

Baby Beluga is a fun-filled collection of favorite children's songs and Raffi originals, all performed in the singer's folksy, expressive style. Beluga begins with the sounds of whales communicating in their high-pitch squeaks (which presented here come across as cute and sweet) and features melodic lines that evoke vivid pictures of gentle waves and a frolicking whale. An illustrated sing-along book that is published separately is a nice companion to this first track, giving young listeners visual images of the song's narrative. The rest of this varied album blends traditional songs like "Oats and Beans and Barley" and "This Old Man" with four original pieces by Raffi, including the instrumental "Water Dance. " Liner notes have the complete lyrics, a description and history of beluga whales, and explanations of Raffi's inspiration and ties to each song. This is an excellent album with catchy tunes that's sure to become a household favorite. -Tami Horiuchi.
