Review The Princess Diaries / Original Soundtrack:In the 1960s, the comedy The Princess Diaries might have starred Walt Disney favourite Hayley Mills, who often found her characters in similarly farfetched situations. Forty years on, it's a Disney flick, but with a few crucial updates. Among them is this soundtrack album, which collects non-threatening tracks aimed as much at prepubescent kids as teenagers. (When Melissa Lefton chirps, "I love life, life loves me / Everything in the world makes me happy", it's a moment as far from Cobain-style angst as any in post-"Smells Like Teen Spirit" pop. ) Even the biggest names here (Backstreet Boys, Diaries co-star Mandy Moore) clock in with music hardly as interesting as their genuinely sweet hits; almost everyone else supplies producer-driven filler that seems barely able to rouse even the sunniest child listener. The cheerleading of B*Witched's "Hold On" and Lil' J's cover of Salt 'n' Pepa's "Ain't Nuthin' but a She Thing" are nothing to complain about, but the disc seems designed to go in one ear and out the other. -Rickey Wright.

Review WWF Aggression / Various Artists:All that's missing from this World Wrestling Foundation-sanctioned compilation is a version of Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff". A shrewd marketing move and sometimes even good music, WWF Aggression collects rap takes on 13 theme songs from the televised extravaganzas that brought mega-fame to the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind, and even honcho Vince McMahon. The tone here is mostly curse-free rap with gangsta and occasional rock overtones. Highlights include Method Man's "Know Your Role", Snoop Dogg and WC's "Hell Yeah", and "No Chance", which brings together Redman, Rock, and disc jockey Peanut Butter Wolf. Special mention must be made of "Wreck", which partakes less of the cartoon macho that makes these artists fine matches for their subjects than it does of just plain weirdness. But what else would you expect of a space-odyssey tale recited by Kool Keith and ODB?-Rickey Wright.

Review To Infinity And Beyond! : Songs From and Inspired by Toy Story & Toy Story 2 / Various:No matter how advanced the technology or how sophisticated the plot, Disney have always stressed the importance of good music in their animated films. To Infinity & Beyond, a compilation of music from both Toy Story movies, very clearly demonstrates this. Stripped away from the awesome visuals and digital spectacle the songs of Toy Story are, more often than not, wonderful. Contributions from score composer Randy Newman (whose "You've Got A Friend In Me" appears here in four different versions, including a duet with Lyle Lovett and a big band number with Robert Goulet) and Sarah McLachlan share space with the equally delightful "The Claw" (performed by The Aliens), "Cadence 2" (performed by Billy Henry and the Green Machine) and "Pig Rap" (performed by Two Big Pigs). Review The Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition Original Soundtrack (deluxe) [SOUNDTRACK] / RCA:As the bridging film of the original Star Wars trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) topped its predecessor in terms of story, character development, and special effects. Directed by Irvin Kershner, the sequel documents the relentless pursuit of the rebels by Darth Vader, a burgeoning romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia, and the training of Luke by the mystical Yoda. Taking advantage of his elaborate leitmotif design, composer John Williams introduces a wise, spiritual theme for Yoda and a delicate love theme that assumes a more dramatic profile after Han is betrayed and frozen into sculpture. The score is also an imaginative inventory of self-contained settings, whether it be the chilly Hoth soundscapes, the otherworldly choruses of Cloud City, or the intricate gymnastics written for "The Asteroid Field". Discarding the heroic optimism of his previous score, Williams enforces the film's overriding dark tone through the ominous, brassy "Imperial March". Appearing in virtually every cue, the march accompanies Vader's obsessive quest to kidnap and convert Luke to the dark side.
