Review WWF Music With an Attitude (Box Set) / Various Artists:If you can't get enough of that wrestling stuff, this is the box set for you. Four CDs include music by wrestling's old-school 1980s stars (Hulk Hogan, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Captain Lou Albano), heavy-metal hits (on Full Metal: The Album) and volumes 2 and 3 of the WWF: The Music compilations. WWF fans will recognise the entrance themes for most of the turn-of-the-millennium's hottest stars, such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, Val Venis, D-Generation X and, of course, The Rock. Full Metal is actually not all metal: both Gold Rush and Undertaker's swelling orchestral themes sound more like soundtracks to vintage black-and-white vampire movies than metal. (This particular CD also has the dubious distinction of having the worst song in the collection: Shawn Michaels' "Sexy Boy". ) If you really want to rock, change the disc to volume 2 and listen to Ahmed Johnson's "Pearl River Rip". For a glimpse into the twisted terrain of Mankind's mind, check out the same CD's "Ode to Freud". Somehow, this three-minute song is almost as revealing as his autobiography, Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks. Volume 3 has also got some choice cuts, specifically Edge's sexy techno-rock theme, Dude Love's hysterical self-titled song (what is it about someone crooning their own name in falsetto that is so funny?), and Oddities' cheerfully infectious "Greatest Show". This box set is a must-have for die-hard wrestling fans. [+]
True, there are some bad songs in the set, but there are many more surprisingly good ones. It's amazing that so many of the wrestlers can actually carry a tune. As Mankind says in his theme song, and as surely many fans will agree, in the world of wrestling, sometimes destruction can indeed be beautiful. -Michelle Riggen If you can't get enough of that wresting stuff, this is the box set for you. Review A Bug's Life [CASSETTE] / Original Soundtrack:One of the truly great ironies of modern American pop culture is the evolution of Randy Newman, social critic and songwriter superb, into one of the 1990s' preeminent scorers of animated films. As in Toy Story, Newman's music for A Bug's Life forms much of the crucial human dimension of the computer-generated visuals, replete with an upbeat, if ever-so-slyly fatalistic "theme" song, "The Time of Your Life. " Newman's mastery of the orchestra sparkles here as he playfully romps from '40s-tinged big-band swing through Stalling-esque parodies and tomfoolery to mock-heroics worthy of Korngold and Waxman (or Randy's uncles-Alfred, Lionel, and Emil-for that matter). The brain trust at Pixar may have made impressive strides in forging their digital illusions of life, but they still seem eons away from replicating the musical synapses of Randy Newman's brain. If Walt's impending, much-rumored big thaw actually works out, will Newman be next in line for the Disney deep freeze? -Jerry McCulley.

Review Little Mermaid / Various:Before Broadway was Disneyfied and Times Square became a mall, the best Broadway musicals were being written for Disney animated features by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Their songs for The Little Mermaid created the mold from which their even more popular work (Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin) would be cast. Almost every tune in Mermaid has its (slightly inferior) counterpart in Beauty, for example. But there's no topping the Oscar-winning calypso show-stopper, "Under the Sea"-in which a Caribbean crab convinces you that "Darlin' it's better/Down where it's wetter. " Other songs, just as delightful, are even more impressive in the context of the movie. The rapturous "Kiss the Girl" accompanies a scene in which, despite the whispered urgings of creatures all around, the romantic hero does not act on the title's advice! That's the kind of abstract dramatic (OK, comedic) conceit you'd expect from Harold Pinter rather than Disney. And the gruesomely hilarious "Les Poissons" gives us a fisheye view of a kitchen where the seafood chef is a sort of French Ed Gein-a sadistic murderer who brutally tortures and chops up his victims, then eats them! Who says Disney never did black comedy? ". I stuff you with bread/It won't hurt, 'cause you're dead/And you're certainly lucky you are. [+]
" Lyricist Ashman may not have been Cole Porter, but he was the next best thing. -Jim Emerson.
