Review Generation Star Wars / Alec Empire:The original 1994 edition of Generation Star Wars had a sleeve that featured stormtroopers with swastikas emblazoned on their helmets and a picture of Alec Empire (lodged between C3PO and R2D2) posing as a techno's blond poster-boy. Its re-release seven years later is stripped of trademark infringements leaving a stark black cover with the legend "Fight The Imperial Forces". The music, of course, has not changed a note. But its arch criticism of conservative forces-whether political or cultural-remains as sharp as the day it was recorded. "Lash The 90ties" cuts straight to the chase with a tractor beam of pink noise that indicates a path for strings that drift like solar winds and breaks that crumble like Mir on re-entry. At over 10 minutes long, it's a bloated but brazen criticism of everything it purports to hate. Money-hungry, android mentalities are revealed on the muted S&M of "Maschinenvolk" and the bleep-beat samba cipher of "Sonyprotitutes". Followed by a triptych of acid tracks-"Pussy Heroin", "New Acid" and "Smack". Running on empty, the former traces a junkie's decline in low-end. The second is a distorted bad trip, the latter a mess of decaying sound. [+]
The music switches without warning between the melancholy and the militant. "Microchipkinder" strikes a final stark note with its time-stretched techno, battling on all frequencies against the entrenched standards of rhythm and melody. -Chris Campion.

Review Mulan [Us Import] / Original Soundtrack:Lea Salonga, best known as the voice of Jasmine in Aladdin, steals the show here as the title character in Disney's Mulan. The former star of Miss Saigon adds touching elements to the feature, especially on introspective numbers such as "Reflection. " Unfortunately, the voice of Donny Osmond, relegated to anthems such as "I'll Make a Man Out of You" doesn't really enhance the story line, a saga set in ancient China. Jerry Goldsmith provides the Far East tinge to the score, almost reminiscent of early Les Baxter. While Mulan is a far cry from the memorable Beauty and the Beast, it is both funny and charming. -Jason Verlinde.

Review The Classical Album / Universal:This is an ideal introduction to some great music for both classical first-time toe-dippers, and people who have some knowledge of classical music but want to get more ideas about other composers they might like. The artists are household names, and can be heard singing or playing music with which they have become particularly associated: Luciano Pavarotti sings "Nessun Dorma", for example, and Lesley Garrett sings in the duet from Lakmé (music used in a British Airways advert). The music crosses all styles and genres, from the full operatic experience of the Act 1 duet from La Bohéme, through the ethereal sounds of New College Choir in John Tavener's Song for Athene (heard at the funeral of Princess Diana) to the cool, ironic score for the film The Piano by Michael Nyman, so there really is something for everyone. There are even some unexpected unfamiliar treats: baroque soprano Emma Kirkby sings a little-known aria by Vivaldi, for example. And at 76 and 78 minutes of music on each disc, it all feels very generous. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Lion King / Various:An Oscar win might suggest a score that would need a miracle to be bettered-but this colourful stage adaptation of Disney's The Lion King does so with flair. Composers Mark Mancina and Lebo M worked closely together to fuse the movie's many disparate elements. Where there was a veritable army exercising creative influences for the animated tale, this brings it all under the wings of a like-minded few. This is genuinely apparent as one track flows into the next. The African rhythms-both vocal and in instrumentation-come across as authentic and original all at once. No doubt this is largely through Mancina's passion for peculiar instruments and the possibilities suggested from nightly live performances. "Grasslands Chant" is a good place to hear this. The hit favourites are here of course, but both "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are pleasingly unrecognizable with chorus and shifting beats. Better still is the likelihood they will now be eclipsed by some of the new numbers. Mancina's own "He Lives in You" being a strong contender. [+]
With a sound mix as crisp as you'd hope to find, this is rousing stuff. -Paul Tonks.

Review The Classic Score / Sony:Compiling film themes into a consistently engaging listen has never been easy. Sony has really pulled it off on The Classic Score though, drawing together a genuinely impressive playlist from multiple labels and artists. Its success is in part down to the ear of whoever compiled it, but it's also a fantastic reminder that film music has by no means grown stale while embracing the 21st century. Witness the popular hits: The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates", Harry Potter, Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, American Beauty, Planet of the Apes, Chocolat and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Lest we forget how great the 1990s were, there's Braveheart, Schindler's List, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Dances With Wolves and The Piano. Add perennial classics such as The Last Emperor and The Deer Hunter's "Cavatina", and any soundtrack collector will admit this is the best collection of themes there's been in a long time. Noticeable by its absence is Titanic, which conclusively proves these two discs were extremely cleverly and considerately compiled. -Paul Tonks.
