Review The Muppet Christmas Carol [1992] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the sombre tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough-the anarchic humour soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humour and sombre drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy. -Sean Axmaker.

Review Toy Story 2 Ost / Randy Newman:For those who loved Randy Newman's score to the first Toy Story (but maybe not the singer-songwriter's gruff voice), check out Toy Story 2. Here, we get a handful of memorable vocal numbers: Sarah McLachlan sings the breathy "When She Loved Me", Riders in the Sky give their retro-swing treatment to "Woody's Roundup" and Robert Goulet croons Toy Story's anthem "You've Got A Friend In Me". The soundtrack's orchestrations are pure Newman-sometimes sweeping, sometimes whimsical, and always fitting for this fantasy story of toys coming to life. Of course, the "You've Got A Friend In Me" theme keeps popping up in the instrumentals, as do Western-themed melodies. Nothing monumental here, but a fun soundtrack nonetheless. For those who want just songs, a companion album-To Infinity & Beyond-features selections from both movies. -Jason Verlinde.

Review The Lion King Collection / Original Soundtrack:After the success of an out-and-out comedy like Aladdin, Disney knew they were on to a good thing but understandably they also didn't want to repeat themselves. So it is that all the way through this coming-of-age tale we have Rowan Atkinson, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella making merry wherever possible. In the songs, it falls to Bean himself verbally to gurn his way through "I Just Can't Wait To Be King". The other comic duo fire off each other superbly through the classic "Hakuna Matata" and the prologue to the cast version of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight". One aspect mildly missed is a sense of togetherness by having motifs from the songs re-appearing in the score. Synth overlays denote the Crimson Tide style of composer Hans Zimmer but then innocent flute lines ("King Of Pride. Rock") do not. So it's an album of halves, where the songs are their own reward and the score proper can only threaten familiarity to those who know the composer's work. [+]-Paul Tonks.

This CD sports an over-the-top flavour drawn from video-game-styled electronic blips, disco danceability and the hollow tripped-out beats of theme park musicals, all of which makes this super hot stuff for the Pokémon generation. The 13 tunes here are spread between action narrative ("What Kind of Pokémon Are You?", "Together Forever"), scene-setting devices ("Viridian City") and character theme songs for our hero Ash, his Pokémon Pickachu and his pal Misty, as well as rival trainers, Team Rocket. "What Kind of Pok&eaxute;mon Are You?" features multi-tracked rapping and R&B choral refrains; the superlative "2. B. A. Master" bursts with space-age Michael Jackson-inspired speak singing and electronic riffs; and not only is the funky "PokéRap" featured in audio, but the enhanced disc contains the visual component as well.
