Review Not for Kids Only / David Grisman:An aptly named album if ever there was one, Not for Kids Only combines the talents of two legendary performers, the late Jerry Garcia, singer/guitarist of the Grateful Dead, and David Grisman, mandolinist and father of "dawg music", a melding of bluegrass, jazz, swing, Latin and Jewish klezmer sounds. On this 1993 recording, the two devoted friends make seemingly effortless music, adapting traditional and old-time folk into a personalised sound so "homemade" (with jew's-harp and tambourine) as to inspire any child, young or old, to pick up whatever's at hand to play along. From the jaunty rhythms of "Jenny Jenkins" to the cornball humour of "Arkansas Traveller" and the laugh-out-loud lyrics of "A Horse Named Bill" ("I had a girl and her name was Daisy / And when she sang the cat went crazy"), this album, with Garcia's delightful hand-drawn cover art, tickles from top to bottom. -Alanna Nash.

Review Toy Story 2 Ost / Randy Newman:For those who loved Randy Newman's score to the first Toy Story (but maybe not the singer-songwriter's gruff voice), check out Toy Story 2. Here, we get a handful of memorable vocal numbers: Sarah McLachlan sings the breathy "When She Loved Me", Riders in the Sky give their retro-swing treatment to "Woody's Roundup" and Robert Goulet croons Toy Story's anthem "You've Got A Friend In Me". The soundtrack's orchestrations are pure Newman-sometimes sweeping, sometimes whimsical, and always fitting for this fantasy story of toys coming to life. Of course, the "You've Got A Friend In Me" theme keeps popping up in the instrumentals, as do Western-themed melodies. Nothing monumental here, but a fun soundtrack nonetheless. For those who want just songs, a companion album-To Infinity & Beyond-features selections from both movies. -Jason Verlinde.

Review Meditations - Works for Guitar / Chandos:Like his fellow countryman John Williams, Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden is no slouch when it comes to performing new repertoire. So, for an album of "meditative" music that could have been an excuse simply to dust-off some old classical guitar warhorses, Ogden fearlessly throws in four premiere recordings of contemporary pieces to broaden the disc's appeal. Takashi Yoshimatsu's Wind Color Vector uses the guitar to evoke the elemental nature of the wind (it's one part of a three-movement work inspired by wind, water and sky) with extensive use of harmonics; while his Two Little Pieces are musical depictions of "a lonely fish" (lots of swirling right hand tremelo) and "a white view"(!). Eduardo Sainz de la Maza's Platero y yo imparts a gentle jazz sensibility to a Spanish subject; while the last of William Lovelady's Incantations is subtitled "Hommage to Stanley Myers", which links neatly to Myers's most famous composition, his Cavatina (here played in John Williams's classic solo guitar arrangement for the film The Deer Hunter). Throughout, Ogden's playing is a constant source of pleasure. Whether in evergreens like Cavatina and Tárrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra, or the new, unfamiliar repertoire, his flawless technique and tone-production, perfectly captured by the Chandos recording, are the strongest reasons to buy this disc. -Mark Walker.
