Review Birds Beasts Bugs and Fishes / Pete Seeger:Folk music represents the best of Americana, and nobody performs folk music better than Pete Seeger. This charming collection of animal songs, remastered from two Seeger LPs originally recorded in 1955, will delight children and parents alike. Comfortable, well-known titles such as "I Had a Rooster", "Frog Went A-Courting", "Skip to My Lou", and "I Know an Old Lady (Who Swallowed a Fly)" allow for great family sing-alongs. This album is an excellent example of the simplicity of traditional folk music, with Seeger's warm, friendly vocals and a single yet finely picked banjo as accompaniment. Review Tweenies - The Album: Friends Forever / Tweenies:For their debut album, kids' favourites the Tweenies eschew the realms of the nursery rhymes they peddle in their TV series, in favour of a more poppy feel. So instead of counting songs and tales of life on the farm, you get bright and breezy poppy tunes promoting friendship and the joys of life. The series theme tune, "Hey, hey are you ready to play" is there in all its Day-Glo glory, along with "We're gonna have a party!" and the smash-hit single "No. 1". If you're planning a kids' party, then look no further-a quick test of the album on a bunch of three-year-old kids soon had them all up and bouncing about, and many of them even instantly recognised the dulcet tones of Jake, Milo, Bella, Fizz and Doodles. Review The Lion King Collection / Original Soundtrack:After the success of an out-and-out comedy like Aladdin, Disney knew they were on to a good thing but understandably they also didn't want to repeat themselves. So it is that all the way through this coming-of-age tale we have Rowan Atkinson, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella making merry wherever possible. In the songs, it falls to Bean himself verbally to gurn his way through "I Just Can't Wait To Be King". The other comic duo fire off each other superbly through the classic "Hakuna Matata" and the prologue to the cast version of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight". One aspect mildly missed is a sense of togetherness by having motifs from the songs re-appearing in the score. Synth overlays denote the Crimson Tide style of composer Hans Zimmer but then innocent flute lines ("King Of Pride. Rock") do not. So it's an album of halves, where the songs are their own reward and the score proper can only threaten familiarity to those who know the composer's work. [+]-Paul Tonks.

Review Cathedral Voices / Classics:Anyone who has ever sung in a church choir or choral society will enjoy this two-disc compilation of religious choral music. Some 29 tracks of complete short works or excerpts from larger pieces, written over the past 500 years, have been selected from recordings by cathedral, chapel and professional choirs. They range from Tallis's Spem in Alium to Arvo Pärt's De Profundis and Britten's A. M. D. G. , and include the Schütz Choir of London singing a chorus from Brahms' German Requiem, Harry Christophers and the Sixteen performing a Poulenc motet, the Taverner Consort, which provides six tracks, and the Bamburg Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (with soprano Christiane Oelze as soloist) singing Bruckner's setting of Psalm 150. Much of this music is more familiar today in the concert hall than in a liturgical setting, and whether some of the composers were religious or not, or even believed in God, hardly matters. The sound of combined human voices and the words they had to set inspired them all to produce music that is simultaneously calming and uplifting, allowing them to create music that continues to reach deep into the human psyche. -Richard Fawkes.

Review Meditations - Works for Guitar / Chandos:Like his fellow countryman John Williams, Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden is no slouch when it comes to performing new repertoire. So, for an album of "meditative" music that could have been an excuse simply to dust-off some old classical guitar warhorses, Ogden fearlessly throws in four premiere recordings of contemporary pieces to broaden the disc's appeal. Takashi Yoshimatsu's Wind Color Vector uses the guitar to evoke the elemental nature of the wind (it's one part of a three-movement work inspired by wind, water and sky) with extensive use of harmonics; while his Two Little Pieces are musical depictions of "a lonely fish" (lots of swirling right hand tremelo) and "a white view"(!). Eduardo Sainz de la Maza's Platero y yo imparts a gentle jazz sensibility to a Spanish subject; while the last of William Lovelady's Incantations is subtitled "Hommage to Stanley Myers", which links neatly to Myers's most famous composition, his Cavatina (here played in John Williams's classic solo guitar arrangement for the film The Deer Hunter). Throughout, Ogden's playing is a constant source of pleasure. Whether in evergreens like Cavatina and Tárrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra, or the new, unfamiliar repertoire, his flawless technique and tone-production, perfectly captured by the Chandos recording, are the strongest reasons to buy this disc. -Mark Walker.
