Review WWF - The Music Volume 3 / Various Artists:It's a stroke of marketing genius: just before any of the World Wrestling Federation's stars enters an arena, his theme music blares over the speakers. It's an amazing dramatic device for the story-line-fuelled "sports entertainment experience", and it drives the fans wild. It doesn't make for good songs, but that's not really the point-after all, the idea here is to get a distinctive 10 to 15 seconds that sounds good at stadium sound levels; after about 30 seconds it's easy to see that these "songs" are really nothing more than pumped-up jingles. As a series of commercials for the WWF's stars, 14 of which are represented here, or as a memento for fans, this disc is made to order. If you're looking for a CD that you'll actually put on the stereo for fun, you're better off with either WWF Agression or ECW: Extreme Music. -Randy Silver.

Review A Bug's Life / Original Soundtrack:One of the truly great ironies of modern American pop culture is the evolution of Randy Newman, social critic and songwriter superb, into one of the 1990s' preeminent scorers of animated films. As in Toy Story, Newman's music for A Bug's Life forms much of the crucial human dimension of the computer-generated visuals, replete with an upbeat, if ever-so-slyly fatalistic "theme" song, "The Time of Your Life. " Newman's mastery of the orchestra sparkles here as he playfully romps from '40s-tinged big-band swing through Stalling-esque parodies and tomfoolery to mock-heroics worthy of Korngold and Waxman (or Randy's uncles-Alfred, Lionel, and Emil-for that matter). The brain trust at Pixar may have made impressive strides in forging their digital illusions of life, but they still seem eons away from replicating the musical synapses of Randy Newman's brain. If Walt's impending, much-rumored big thaw actually works out, will Newman be next in line for the Disney deep freeze? -Jerry McCulley.

Review WWF - The Music Volume 4 / Various Artists:They've got the moves, they've got the outfits, and yes, they've got the music. Anyone familiar with the part circus-sideshow, part rock-video testostoronefest of the World Wrestling Federation's Raw and Smackdown shows will recognize the entrance songs for the hottest stars in the WWF. These are the songs to which the wrestlers power up as they take the stage amidst flashing lights, fog machines, and rock kicks to challenge their rivals. The majority of tracks on this compilation are suitably high energy, with enough power chords and distorted vocals to make even doing your laundry seem edgy and potentially dangerous. Stone Cold Steve Austin's "Oh Hell Yeah" sounds like Ministry lite, Chris Jericho's "Break Down the Wall" is a catchy rap-metal number, and the Test's awesome theme song "This Is a Test" has been known to inspire twitchy, robotic dances in its listeners. By far the most entertaining song on this CD is Mr. Ass's cleverly entitled "I'm an Ass Man. " With lines like "Buns of glory, buns of steel, your eyes will give away the truth of how I feel" you know he is serious about the subject of ass. For the more romantic wrestling fan, Mark Henry's "Sexual Chocolate" provides a smooth, Barry White-like change of pace. Not all songs on this CD have the same verve. [+]
Mankind's "Wreck" is rather monotonous despite background car-crash effects, which is disappointing since he is one of wrestling's most interesting characters and should have a good song. "Ministry," Undertaker's theme, never quite lives up to the swelling crescendos of its intro. But this is after all intro music; if the first 15 seconds are good enough to get the crowd fired up, who cares if the rest of the song, like the sport it represents, is mostly comprised of smoke and mirrors? -Michelle Riggen.

Review The Classical Album / Universal:This is an ideal introduction to some great music for both classical first-time toe-dippers, and people who have some knowledge of classical music but want to get more ideas about other composers they might like. The artists are household names, and can be heard singing or playing music with which they have become particularly associated: Luciano Pavarotti sings "Nessun Dorma", for example, and Lesley Garrett sings in the duet from Lakmé (music used in a British Airways advert). The music crosses all styles and genres, from the full operatic experience of the Act 1 duet from La Bohéme, through the ethereal sounds of New College Choir in John Tavener's Song for Athene (heard at the funeral of Princess Diana) to the cool, ironic score for the film The Piano by Michael Nyman, so there really is something for everyone. There are even some unexpected unfamiliar treats: baroque soprano Emma Kirkby sings a little-known aria by Vivaldi, for example. And at 76 and 78 minutes of music on each disc, it all feels very generous. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Toy Story [1996] / Walt Disney Home Video:There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces-you smile at the spell it puts you into and are refreshed, and not a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic" and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing as it reawakens the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts (namely Knickknack and Tin Toy, which can be found on the Pixar video Tiny Toy Stories) illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humour-one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney. Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favourite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year-the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though-he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. [+]
Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar "For the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film. " In other words, the movie is great. -Doug Thomas Toy Story 1 John Lasseter's Toy Story poses the universal and magical question of what do toys do when they are not being played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favourite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys during a wrenching time of year-the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though-he believes he is the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar "For the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film". In other words, the movie is great. Toy Story 2 Like the handful of other great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out that Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular 1960s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story. Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living for forever. Toy Story 2 was deservedly a huge box-office success. -Doug Thomas.

Review John T Williams - Greatest Hits, 1969-99 / London Symphony Orchestra:Thanks in no small part to his relationship with directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, composer John Williams has been associated with many of the greatest box-office successes of all time. Combining original tracks with re-recordings, Greatest Hits 1969-1999 surveys the astonishing body of work assembled by the composer over the past three decades. This handsomely packaged two-disc set demonstrates how Williams single-handedly revived the romantic, symphonic film score as personified by the Golden Age of Hollywood, while affirming the value of film as an important vehicle for serious musical expression at the same time. The composer's melodic gifts are emphasised, whether it be through stirring marches (Superman, The Empire Strikes Back), enchanted Christmas music (Home Alone) or opulent chorales (The Phantom Menace). Thirteen of his famous collaborations with Spielberg are offered (including E. T. , Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan), as are excerpts from the four Star Wars films. The earliest score presented in the set is The Reivers (1969), which confirmed Williams's arrival as an important new voice. Also included are his contributions to the 1984 and 1996 Olympics, along with recent efforts such as the spiritual Rosewood and the light sonorities of Stepmom. The set also illustrates the composer's ability to break down the barriers between absolute music and functional music-consider his use of classical scherzos (Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade) or the cello obligato of Yo-Yo Ma in Seven Years in Tibet. [+]
Williams's music was critical to the impact of all these films, none of which would have been nearly as successful without his unseen but heartfelt presence. -Kevin Mulhall.
