Review Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones / Original Soundtrack:

With George Lucas' Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones impressively showcasing rich drama beyond the customary eye-popping spectacle, long-time franchise collaborator John Williams' score follows suit with a rewarding and compelling mix of tragedy-tinged romance and epic action, enveloped in a pervading air of approaching doom. Dispensing with The Phantom Menace's exuberant, youthful orchestrations, more at home in E. T. , Attack of the Clones pleasingly mirrors Williams' work on franchise zenith The Empire Strikes Back. Fans will delight in the increased appearance of the series' classic themes, underlining the wider saga and tantalisingly foreshadowing future events while, like a Bond score, retaining the series' beloved musical signature. Williams frames the film's tragic romance with a beautiful love theme, "Across the Stars". A sweeping epic with a melancholic edge, it's the strongest track, the "threatened romance" theme further showcased in "Anakin and Padme" and "The Meadow Picnic". Yet, the action cues find Williams on equally glorious form. "Jango's Escape" and "Bounty Hunter's Pursuit" are thoroughly exciting fare while "Zam the Assassin" is a breathless 11-minute epic, with Williams exploring new ground, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-esque percussion and, surprisingly, electric guitar. The forbidding atmosphere reaches a deliriously thrilling crescendo with "Return to Tatooine", "The Tusken Camp" and "Love Pledge and the Arena", a heart-rending collision of romance, action and inescapable dread, interwoven with a plethora of the series themes. [+]
When "The Imperial March" makes a full-blown appearance in "Confrontation with Count Dooku"-as a victorious fanfare, no less-it recalls the best heart-stopping moments of Williams' original Star Wars orchestrations. Coming so far in to such a distinguished career, this is an impressive, memorable work that once again showcases Williams' virtuoso affinity with cinema and, beyond that, a magnificent fifth segment in his eventual Magnum Opus. -Danny Graydon.

Review Dinosaur: Original Soundtrack / James Newton-Howard:

The opening inseparable double-act of "Inner Sanctum/The Nesting Grounds" followed by "The Egg Travels" represents the first of two uncharacteristically brave, musical choices made by Disney. This is a completely dialogue-free ten minutes starting the movie which, like the trailer that preceded it, tells its story solely through music. The second act of bravery is the complete absence of a single song. Newton Howard, therefore, had both a great weight and freedom on his shoulders. His response is something with the ethnic anywhere percussive feel of The Lion King coupled with a romanticism John Williams would be happy with. After this overture is the love theme for "Aladar and Neera", which is one of the most beautiful melodies the composer has ever produced. The rest of the album follows the overture stylistically, punctuated frequently by angry bursts of electronically augmented percussion. "Raptors/Stand Together" is the best example of this, and also illustrates that the cues are a jumble of the film's chronology since this is the climactic battle finale. The absence of songs means this won't appeal to the usual kiddie collectors, but everyone else should admire Disney's bravery. -Paul Tonks.

Review Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith / Original Score:

This CD + DVD package comes with a Special Edition Amazon. co. uk Exclusive Slipcase. John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it. ) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it-even for those who do not have all their money invested in S. W. memorabilia. [+]
There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. -Mike McGonigal.

Review WWF The Music Vol.5 / Various Artists:

The appeal of this CD is at once limited and immense. A 14-song disc featuring the entrance theme songs of World Wrestling Federation superstars will be attractive mostly to WWF fans. But there's certainly several arenas full of those, and that carnivorous clan will certainly want to catch The Rock making his recording debut on "Pie", a skit/novelty song featuring Slick Rick. While a couple of tracks are repetitive instrumental entries with a few vocals, others are more fully developed songs: Motorhead's performanceof "The Game", Triple H's theme song, is raucous fun. The melodic andportentous "If You Dare", Tazz' theme song, is another winner. Ditto the moody "Out of the Fire" that announces Kane's entrance. Odd but appealing is "The One", Billy Gunn's theme song, and "I've Got It All", with its "Sweet Jane" melody line. From hip-hop to metal, this collection has something for every hardcore wrestling fan willing to "smackdown" their hard-earned bucks for the cause. -Katherine Turman.

Review Totally Pokémon: Music From the Hit TV Series / Various:

Pokémon fever continues to burn hot, as evidenced by this catching symptom: a high-octane pop soundtrack from the animated television series. Dream teen group Johto borrow from the elements that make Backstreet Boys, Britney, Christina and 'N Sync sensationally popular, repackaging the sound Pokémon-style for young audiences. A cross between Up With People, Hanson, and a latter-day Mickey Mouse Club, Totally Pokémon opens with "Pokémon Johto", a syrupy pop jingle that opens the television show each Saturday morning. The record's first single, "Pikachu (I Choose You)", is an infectiously buoyant Latin-tinged dance number and "He Drives Me Crazy" is a youthfully crushed-out ballad in celebration of series protagonist Ash Ketchum. Included here too are seven bonus karaoke tracks (lyrics are printed inside the disc liner), and while adults may weary of these songs, those with Pikachu-obsessed children can rest assured that Totally Pokémon is clean, fun and goofy enough to include a tune called "Song of Jigglypuff". -Paige la Grone.

Review WWF Aggression / Various Artists:

All that's missing from this World Wrestling Foundation-sanctioned compilation is a version of Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff". A shrewd marketing move and sometimes even good music, WWF Aggression collects rap takes on 13 theme songs from the televised extravaganzas that brought mega-fame to the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind, and even honcho Vince McMahon. The tone here is mostly curse-free rap with gangsta and occasional rock overtones. Highlights include Method Man's "Know Your Role", Snoop Dogg and WC's "Hell Yeah", and "No Chance", which brings together Redman, Rock, and disc jockey Peanut Butter Wolf. Special mention must be made of "Wreck", which partakes less of the cartoon macho that makes these artists fine matches for their subjects than it does of just plain weirdness. But what else would you expect of a space-odyssey tale recited by Kool Keith and ODB?-Rickey Wright.

Review Star Wars: Special Edition Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] / RCA:

John Williams's music for Star Wars looks back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, particularly to the sweeping grandeur of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's The Sea Hawk and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Korngold, himself an opera composer, drew upon the Wagnerian leitmotif technique of assigning a melody to each important character, and Williams followed this approach, creating a series of memorable themes developed throughout all the Star Wars movies, including The Phantom Menace. The result is a vast, surprisingly unified tapestry of music, a veritable space-operatic Ring cycle for our times. This rich, glittering, boldly orchestrated music is filled with rousing action, wistful reflective passages and moments of playful humour (including some witty retro-alien jazz for the Mos Eisley cantina band). Epic in scope and wearing it's romantic heart on its sleeve, Williams's music is a galaxy far, far away from the ecstatic, modernistic score he produced the same year for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Although various Star Wars albums have long been available, this double-disc Special Edition at last presents the entire score in original running order. The performance of the London Symphony Orchestra is superb, and the remastered sound a significant improvement on previous issues. In 1977 Star Wars heralded a revival of traditional orchestral scoring which continues today, paving the way for such composers as David Arnold, Bruce Broughton, Patrick Doyle, James Horner and many more. This is the definitive presentation of perhaps the pivotal score in all film history, and an essential part of any collection. -Gary S. [+]
