Review Discovery: Remastered / Electric Light Orchestra:Although Discovery isn't one of the Electric Light Orchestra's strongest albums, it is more than redeemed by the inclusion of what is perhaps their greatest single, the massive, drum-looped pop genius of "Don't Bring Me Down". "Shine a Little Love" and "Confusion" are also both classic ELO: synths, guitars and orchestration all merging into a finely crafted whole. Unfortunately, songs such as the Beatles pastiche of "The Diary of Horace Wimp" and the overly sentimental "Last Train to London" all show that, for this world-conquering band, time was about to run out. This remastered edition includes three extra tracks, including a cover of Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt". -Robert Burrow.

Review Lloyd Webber: Requiem / Plácido Domingo Sarah Brightman Paul Miles-Kingston Choir Of Winchester Cathedral Martin Neary James Lancelot English Chamber Orchestra Lorin Maazel:Before Andrew Lloyd Webber's seemingly endless run of Broadway shows, when he was known primarily for Jesus Christ Superstar, he managed to write this dramatic, tuneful, occasionally powerful religious work. Although Lloyd Webber takes some liberties with the text and organization of the traditional Requiem mass, the result is a unified and finely crafted composition. There are exciting moments in the "Dies irae" and in the "Lacrymosa", where voices and orchestra are most effectively used to convey the desperate yet hopeful feeling of the text. This work isn't performed much these days in its entirety, but, as in many of Lloyd Webber's musicals, it produced a "hit" tune-the "Pie Jesu"-whose popularity alone could have kept the composer living comfortably for the rest of his life. -David Vernier.

Review A Present For Everyone / Busted:Busted may look about as rock as Westlife, but A Present for Everyone confirms that under those chiselled cheek bones and polite smiles they're every inch the British Blink 182. For the most part, the clean-cut trio's second album is full of the same dumb fun as their first. Careering hyperactively through trashy skate-punk fantasies, classroom crushes and troublesome girlfriends, "Crashed the Wedding" and "Who's David" are irresistibly throwaway teen trauma, while "She Wants to Be Me" deals with the difficult issue of an overly dependent girlfriend ("she's so obsessed with me/now she stands up to pee"). That line aside, second time around there's even a newfound maturity that creeps through in some of their songwriting, which means that they carry off the bittersweet pop of break-up song "Over Now" with conviction and without resorting to cheap laughs. Ultimately though, it's the pogoing choruses and crude one-liners that are the main attraction. And they don't come much better than "Air Hostess" with its less than wholesome appreciation of a girl in uniform: "I messed my pants when we flew over France". -Dan Gennoe.

Review The Better Life / 3 Doors Down:The Mississippi-based quartet 3 Doors Down has only one thing that sets them apart from other hard rock bands: lead vocalist Brad Arnold is also the drummer. The group shops the sounds of Pearl Jam and the Goo Goo Dolls, pointing at what they like, picking it off the shelf and throwing it into the stew. While the music on The Better Life, their debut, sounds overall both competent and confident, the songs themselves are equally uninspired and clichéd. For example, the riff from the track "Loser" is straight out of the Alice In Chains songbook, adding much more cringe-worthy lyrics ("Addiction needs a pacifier, the buzz of this poison is taking me higher"). In fact, most of the lyrics zero in on well-worn rock themes of aggravation, confusion and frustration, feelings that 3 Doors Down will easily coax out of discriminating listeners. -Jason Josephes.

Review Bring It on / Gomez:In 1998, Gomez burst onto the music scene from out of nowhere and picked up the prestigious Mercury Music prize for their debut album, Bring It On. Hailing from Liverpool, this five-piece band of gawky youths seem to be the very antithesis of traditional rock stars, but their appearance and heritage belie their rich and rootsy sound: their combination of Ben Ottewell's gravely voice and slide guitar conjure up images of the American South, especially on singles "Whippin' Piccadilly" and "Get Myself Arrested". Combining a soul sensitivity with a pop sensibility, Gomez constructed one of the most stunning debuts of the 1990's. -Carina Trimingham.

Review Into The Blues / Joan Armatrading:On the surface, yes, this is a blues album; mostly, though, it's a Joan Armatrading album-which means she'll follow blues forms and conceits wherever she damn well pleases. On "Liza," she takes the "Mannish Boy" groove across the tracks for a pick-up on the wrong side of town; on "There Ain't a Girl Alive (Who Likes to Look in the Mirror Like You Do)," she dresses down a rival; on "Play the Blues," she simply undresses herself to a juicy, contemporary soul groove; and on "Mama Papa," the album's finest and funkiest moment, she recalls her youth on the island of St. Kitts in lines that flash with truth: "Seven people in one room/No heat/One wage/And bills to pay. " It's also a guitar album: her blues chops, especially on the sprawling closer "Something's Gotta Blow," would give Robert Cray a serious run. Fiery as her playing can be, her blues riffs are mostly economical, concise, with evocative spaces between the notes. The same can't be said for the overall production values. Armatrading is still enamored with slick gimmicks: doubling and tripling her vocals and adding layers of echo on top of that, and synth pads and distortion that feel more bombastic than bright. Into the Blues is far from a return to form, but it still sends a tough, funky message. -Roy Kasten.

Review Curious George / Various Artists:Admit it: If you had to pick an artist to give voice to the wackadoo thinkings of a monkey beloved by most of the American populace over age 3, you could do a lot worse than Jack Johnson. Black Eyed Peas? Too hyper. Death Cab for Cutie? Too ironic. They Might Be Giants? Too eggheaded. Johnson, though the object of much rightful jealousy-here, after all, is a guy who only stumbled into music and vaulted himself up the charts after a successful career as a pro surfer-turns out to have the goods to do H. A. Rey, Curious George's creator, proud. Fans familiar with Johnson's earlier discs will recognize a certain laconic sprawl and easy fascination in his songs that suits the theme of perpetual puzzlement perfectly (here, let's not forget, is a guy who racked up fans with songs called "Bubble Toes" and "Banana Pancakes"). That the music takes a childish turn barely registers-songs like opener "Upside Down" are classic Johnson, all wonderment and groove, and the collaborations with friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa warm up, wink, and scamper off before packing on the weight of excess meaning. [+]

Review Nothing Can Stop Us / Robert Wyatt:Still under contract to Virgin as the '70s drew to a close, Robert Wyatt got special dispensation from Richard Branson to record a series of singles for upstart indie Rough Trade, the glorious results of which found their way onto this reissued 1982 compilation. Wyatt's melancholy choirboy voice and minimalist arrangements are astonishingly effective throughout a series of unlikely covers, including a liturgical rendition of Chic's "At Last I Am Free," the Golden Gate Quartet's "Stalin Wasn't Stallin'," the Billie Holiday-identified "Strange Fruit," and a suitably bizarre, tabla-driven take on Ivor Cutler's "Grass" (sample lyric: "While we talk I'll hit your head with a nail to make you understand me / I have something important to say"). It's a shame Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" is not included here, but no matter: Wyatt's "Caimanera" and "Arauco" alone are worth the price of admission. -Billy Grenier.
