Review Ghosts I-IV / Nine Inch Nails:

Ghosts I-IV, the new album from Nine Inch Nails, sees the legendary rockers explore some serious new sonic territory. Comprised of almost two hours of music composed and recorded over a ten-week period, Ghosts I-IV boasts 36 tracks described by Trent Reznor as a "soundtrack for daydreams". That's perhaps true-especially if your daydreams are particularly dark and surreally beautiful. Swelling synths, infectious (and often maudlin) piano melodies, baleful drones and glitchy textures are the unorthodox instruments employed here rather than the standard guitars, drums and stadium-fuelled braggadocio. The immediate impression is more post-rock than indie rock, with sincere nods to avant practitioners like Sigur Ros and Radiohead. But contributions from the likes of Adrian Belew (King Crimson) ensure the mystical ambience is punctuated with blasts of electric psychedelia, and the NIN sound remains somehow recognizable beneath the surface. A hugely successful and beautifully otherworldly trip to outer musical realms. -Danny McKenna.

Review It'll End in Tears / This Mortal Coil:

The debut release by this superstar-Goth outfit shined (and still does) in all its glorious misery and despair. Just how can it be so beautiful? the listener wonders. For one thing, when the project is conceptualized by 4AD Records brain-man Ivo Watts-Russell and includes artists from groundbreaking U. K. bands such as Cocteau Twins, Magazine, and Dead Can Dance, and when a chunk of the material is from musical heavyweights such as Tim Buckley (the haunting "Song to the Siren"), Alex Chilton of Big Star (the devastating "Holocaust" and the heartbreakingly lovely "Kangaroo"), and Colin Newman of Wire (the rockin' "Not Me"), you're bound to come up with something that will be remembered and revered by old-school Goths everywhere. This is lush, hypnotic, astonishingly beautiful. -Lorry Fleming.

Review Dare / Human League:

When flipping through the annals of new-wave history, one can easily enough overlook the entry marked "Human League". But the truth of the matter is, this Phil Oakey-helmed synth-pop outfit was crucial to the movement, and Dare!, its third release, is an absolute linchpin. Thanks to its breakthrough single "Don't You Want Me", the record almost single-handedly made it safe to like new wave, and an MTV video gave it a fashionable face that was impossible to ignore. The sound was theatrical and awash with kitschy keyboards, but felt new and refreshing back in 1982. The League would never climb to such hooky aesthetic heights again; Dare! ranks as its greatest achievement-and it still sounds new and refreshing today. -Tom Lanham.

Review Hayley Westenra: Pure / Hayley Westenra Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Ian Dean:

Pure is presented as 16-year-old New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra's first album, though it follows a chart-topping eponymous debut and follow-up Christmas disc, My Gift to You. Pure is still Hayley's first UK release, and capitalises on a rapid move into the international limelight following a duet with Russell Watson as part of his 2002 tour, now preserved on DVD as Russell Watson: The Voice (Live In New Zealand). Comparisons with Charlotte Church are inevitable, yet Westenra has her own distinctive sound. She has impeccably clear diction coupled with a gorgeous voice with a very wide range: her high notes in the Kate Bush hit "Wuthering Heights" are especially striking, and like Bush she is also a dancer, having performed with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. If there's a problem, it's that Pure doesn't have a focus to match Westenra's talent, the tracks spanning everything from "Amazing Grace" to a Maori lullaby ("Hine e Hine") to hybrid pieces adapted from Ravel ("Never Say Goodbye") and Vivaldi's Four Seasons ("River of Dreams"). Ultimately what this set does demonstrate is that whatever direction Westenra finally settles on, she has the ability to go to the very top. For now she is a young artist finding her way, and for many listeners the result is Pure magic. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Dreams Can Come True - Greatest Hits Vol 1 / Gabrielle:

Since her maiden single, "Dreams", debuted at No. 1 in 1997, Gabrielle has gone from strength to strength releasing a string of soulful hits-as featured on this compilation. From the tearjerker "Out of Reach" (from Bridget Jones's Diary) to her recent Top 10 hit "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)" and her fantastic cover of the Dionne Warwick classic "Walk On By", Gabrielle opts for deeply felt music which, she has admitted, often reflects on her own life. Also included in this selection is "If You Ever" (featuring E17) and the wonderfully positive "Rise" taken from the album of the same name which heralded her re-establishment as one of the UK's most successful singer/songwriters. -Norma Powell.

Review Singles / Travis:

Over the last six years or so, Travis have produced some fine pop songs, bringing great tunes back to the UK Top 40. And though not an innovative band nor a radical rock outfit, they have become the kings of the soft-rock-tinged pop song. Middle of the road they may well be but, as these 17 ditties illustrate, they can sure get that toe tapping. With their sing-a-long melodies and their catchy hooks, it is little wonder that they have proved to be a refreshing alternative for the 25+ers to the bubble-gum pop of the kind that Robbie Williams makes. All the hits are here, from "Driftwood" (one of their first Top 40 successes) to the new offering (and new single) "Walking in the Sun". With this new recording, Travis have stuck to the same radio-friendly, laid-back, acoustic rock that has been extremely good to them over the years; and why not? The track is likely to become a summer festival favourite for the group, constantly being requested by crowds at Glastonbury or Reading. Such gems as "Flowers in the Window" and "Writing to Reach You" are also present, as a reminder of why the band have been so commercially successful. Long may Travis reign as kings of the soft-rock pop song. -Jamie Clark.

Review World Without Tears / Lucinda Williams:

Most artists who appeal to adult listeners tend to settle into a comfortable niche, but Lucinda Williams refuses to play it safe on World Without Tears. Instead her music stings like an open wound as she continues to strip away the protective layers from her art's emotional core. Though Williams has long been prized for the naked honesty of her music, this album is even more raw than its predecessors. From the down-and-dirty bar-band blues of "Atonement" to the Rolling Stones styled swagger of "Bleeding Fingers" to the tricky balance of debasement and transcendence in "Ventura", Williams leaves the nerve endings of her music exposed. With the band opting for first-take immediacy rather than polish, some of the most powerful material is also the neediest, as the singer addresses lovers who have disrespected her ("Righteously") or abandoned her ("Those Three Days", "Minneapolis"). Although her attempts at rap on "Sweet Side" and "American Dream" might cause diehard fans to wince, her willingness to take creative chances reaffirms her position at the vanguard of a rootsy progressivism that transcends musical category. Simply put, there's more Patti Smith in her than there is Patsy Cline. -Don McLeese.

Review All Things Must Pass / George Harrison:

All Things Must Pass was George Harrison's first release following the acrimonious falling apart of the Beatles. Co-produced by the unhinged genius that was Phil Spector, it features his biggest solo hit in the "He's So Fine"-soundalike, "My Sweet Lord". Alongside a laid-back strum through Bob Dylan's "If Not For You", this remastered two-CD set also has the gentle "Isn't It A Pity" and "What is Life"-songs that show a writer enjoying true creative freedom for the first time and exploring his growing devotion to Krishna, outside of Lennon and McCartney's shadow. Ably supported by celebrity mates like Eric Clapton and the redoubtable Ringo Starr, All Things Must Pass is the sound of Harrison breathing out for the first time in 10 years. Moreover, it's conclusive proof that the Beatles were blessed with not just two, but three truly great songwriters. -Billie Swift.

Review Yessongs: Remastered / Yes:

Opening with a few bars of Stravinsky to set the adoring crowd on its feet, this once-three-LP set is Yes at their finest. This was, after all, probably the most mainstream act that had even provisional "prog rock" status, and their tunes show it. While "Heart of the Sunrise" may be one of the more modestly titled Yes songs (compare it with "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" or "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" or even "Total Mass Retain"), it also bears marks of the band playing at its most frenetic pace around Jon Anderson's soaring near-falsetto. Rick Wakeman's grand synthesizer flashes are more than textural, finding visual meshes aplenty with Roger Dean's cryptic cover art-most of which is shrunken or absent on this two-CD reissue. When Yessongs was cut, Marshall stacks were in their heyday, and Yes happily engaged in harmonic and melodic excessiveness as well as carefully planned layers of complexity. "Roundabout" was the band's biggest hit to this point. It appears here faithfully reproduced. As for the rest, it's entertaining in a 1970s way-full of light shows, staged visuals, and more. It took a few years for prog rock to dwindle and for punk-coloured art rock to swerve toward songs about buildings and food. On Yessongs, the band was peaking, singing songs with far grander purpose (Siberia, the Apocalypse, etc. [+]
). By any account, this is one of the classic live albums of its generation, and as the soundtrack to the hip 1998 film Buffalo 66 hinted, at least one manic Yes song ("Heart of the Sunrise") passed muster for drama in the 1990s. -Andrew Bartlett.

Review Sleepless in Seattle Ost / Original Soundtrack:

A romantic's collection if ever there was one, this cachet of songs graced the equally heart-tugging film. King of the Croon and Swoon, Nat King Cole's "Stardust" is probably the most obvious of the young lovers' themes here. Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante, ordinarily not the most romantic of sorts, prove themselves worthy contenders with "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" and "As Time Goes By", respectively. "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" gets an elegantly simple treatment from Carly Simon, and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" confirms her status as the late, great Queen of Country. The only disappointments with this collection are the absence of heart-wrenching numbers by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, or even Johnny Mathis; and the inclusion of the horrendous rendition of "When I Fall in Love" by the over-rated Celine Dion with Clive Griffin. -Steve Gdula.

Review Twenty Five: Deluxe Edition / George Michael:

The last quarter-century has been nothing if not colourful for George Michael. But through all the controversy - the high-profile arrests and audacious videos, the fall-outs and band splits - he has emerged intact as a vital figure on the global pop scene - a fact compounded by his current 25 Live tour and this accompanying Greatest Hits package. Twenty Five is the fourth such collection in Michael's career, though it carries the obvious advantage of being more up to date than 1998's lauded Ladies & Gentlemen and features not only solo material but music from the early Wham! days. As such, it's the most comprehensive anthology yet, featuring upbeat Wham! classics like "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" and "Freedom" amidst sombre solo material like "Praying For Time" and "Jesus To A Child". The collection not only includes a host of evergreen classics, but also recent singles "An Easier Affair" and "This Is Not Real Love" (with former Sugababe Mutya Buena) and two unreleased tracks. There are some notable absences from the collection - "I Want Your Sex" and "Kissing A Fool" are two glaring omissions - but it still remains the most comprehensive survey of the artist's legacy to date. -Danny McKenna.
