Review Let It Rain / Tracy Chapman:With Let It Rain, Tracy Chapman has found a perfect platform for her potent voice. She and coproducer John Parish have opted for a muted approach where guitars and tambourines stir among simple, unadorned rhythms. The singer's once-strummed-acoustic-guitar is replaced by a more constant tidal flow, with handclaps, gospel-tinged choruses, and an open-barrelled bass drum marking time. Chapman even goes trip-hopping on "In the Dark"-a strangely shadowy highpoint featuring her artfully quavering vocal melody. The jumpy interludes on "Hard Wired" and the chamber interlude of "Over in Love" (that is reminiscent of the gorgeous interstitial tunes on Hem's debut) add colour. This is an awesomely crafted folk-soul creation for seasoned fans and for those who love Beth Orton and Norah J ones. -Andrew Bartlett.

Review Reckoning / REM:Reckoning, the 1984 follow-up to REM's brilliantly murky debut, features Michael Stipe's ambiguous moan, drummer Bill Berry's strong backbeat and guitarist Peter Buck's endless wave of catchy, jangling riffs. They wouldn't fully beef up their hard rock until roughly 1986's Life's Rich Pageant but the swimming melodies of "Pretty Persuasion", "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" and "Rockville (Don't Go Back to)" recall why the band frequently earned comparisons to a power-pop Beatles and the country-rock Byrds. Also, the jittery rhythms and deceptively simple guitar lines make the underappreciated "Harborcoat" and "7 Chinese Bros. " worth revisiting. -Steve Knopper.

Review The Used / Used:Being born and raised in the ultra conservative Mormon stronghold of Orem, Utah, obviously had a profound affect on the Used. As well as confirming them as worthy rivals to Linkin Park, Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd, their splenetic debut album vents a lifetime's worth of bottled up neuroses and unresolved anger, in fervent defiance of their hometown's quiet reserve. With singer Bert McCracken schizophrenically flicking between the passive voice of reason and distraught screamer, their manic assault certainly doesn't pull any punches as they bitterly exorcise failed relationships via the likes of "Buried Myself Alive", which careers from mild mannered hurt, to jack hammer guitars and a blood curdling banshee wail of "If you want me back you're gonna have to ask nicer than that. " For sure the stop/start, quiet/loud formula is as old as the hills, but they use it better than most. When they let loose and the screaming starts, the pain and anguish is palpable. Combine that with the huge, unshakable shout-along choruses of "The Taste of Ink", "Noise and Kisses" and "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" and the net result is joyously cathartic. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Tidal / Fiona Apple:Tidal is the debut album by Fiona Apple, a New York singer/songwriter/pianist who was 18 years old at the time of its 1996 release. Apple is obviously talented-she has a dark, smoky alto and a knack for an arresting turn of phrase-but she's still several years away from realizing her potential. For every fresh lyric she writes ("Daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary of waiting to be consumed by you"), she provides two examples of embarrassingly precious schoolgirl poetry ("Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red," from the same song, "The First Taste"). She also has yet to refine her moody piano chords into actual melodies, though "Shadowboxer" comes close. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review Secrets / Toni Braxton:Well, it is a La Face record, so of course it has the Babyface stamp all over it-especially on "Let It Flow", also featured on his Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, and "There's No Me Without You". 'Face does step aside, however, to give other producers, songwriters, and artists their time with Miss Braxton, most notably R. Kelly, Diane Warren, Tony Rich, and Kenny G. R&B songbirds in their own right, Shanice Wilson and Chante Moore even show up on backing vocals. The album doesn't quite live up to this overdose of talent; it's too crammed with boring ballads (even if Braxton's low, husky vocals are perfectly suited for them, especially the wrenching watermark of the album, "Un-Break My Heart"). It's when she slips into a sultry groove on "Come On Over Here" and the smash single "You're Makin Me High" that she really shines. -Rebecca Wallwork.
