Review Exile on Main Street / Rolling Stones:Before Keith Richards' bad habits took over for a time in the mid-'70s, his work ethic was quite high. Stories abound of the long, if somewhat off-schedule, hours he spent working on this classic album in the basement of his home in France. Hanging together as much because of great songwriting ("Rocks Off," "Soul Survivor") as its fabled grungy atmosphere, Exile caps the Stones' great 1968-'72 run with a force that belies their supposed spiritual tiredness. What some of these songs are about is anybody's guess-Keith claims "Ventilator Blues" was inspired by a grate, while the song plays like an ode to a pistol-but that's just part of this album's hazy game. -Rickey Wright.

Review The Ragpicker's Dream / Mark Knopfler:Up until now, Mark Knopfler seems to have had three separate modes of operation: there's been the moody rock style of Dire Straits, the quieter introspection of his soundtracks and the more boisterous lads-down-the-pub humour of his solo outings. With The Ragpicker's Dream, his third solo album, he indulges in all three, often to great effect. Naturally, the humorous tracks (the "King of the Road"-like "Quality Shoe" and Auf Wiedersehen Pet theme "Why Aye Man") are throwaway items. But when Knopfler mixes his two dearest loves-American roots music and the "real" life of the working-man-he produces some of his most heartfelt material to date. The title track is a sweet Christmas narrative, a downbeat "Fairytale of New York". "Marbletown" and "Coyote" are both Southern-style travelling songs, the latter being like an up-tempo "Ode to Billie Joe". Best of all, though, is the mournful and slightly loungey "A Place Where We Used to Live", in which the protagonist looks back on the poignant moments of a hard life. It's a beautiful song, almost matched by the delicate, and sorely troubled "Hill Farmer's Blues", the only track to feature major bursts of that trademark Dire Straits ambient guitar. Knopfler fans will love this album, and there's plenty for roots aficionados, too. -Dominic Wills.

Review Complete Greatest Hits (2CD) / Eagles:This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members-mostly Henley and Frey-in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. -Rickey Wright.

Review All For You / Diana Krall:All for You is a tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummer-less trio-here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as "You Call It Madness" and "I'm Thru with Love", but also allows such up-tempo tunes as "Hit That Jive Jack" to swing with surprising lightness. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review Planet Waves / Bob Dylan:Dylan had been working with The Band occasionally for almost ten years by the time Planet Waves, the first official release with the group backing him, was released in 1974. It's a solid effort with a brace of great songs ("Forever Young", "Something There Is About You"), even if the playing never rises to the fire and energy of The Basement Tapes or some of the combination's legendary live bootlegs. As he wrote Planet Waves, Dylan was at the beginning of the emotional powerslide that would result in Blood on the Tracks, so the songs veer from the bitterness of "Dirge" to the sweet hope of "Wedding Song". -Michael Ruby.

Review The Writing's on the Wall / Destiny's Child:This silky-voiced Texan foursome combine hints of the slow, laconic sweetness of R&B mistress Erykah Badu with the tough, edgy pop of TLC. Like other US R&B girl groups, their follow-up to 1998's self-titled debut comes with the suitable glossy sheen and hot, late 90s producer-in this case She'kspere, the dude behind TLC's summer of 99 hit "No Scrubs". His magical, minimalist touch makes tracks like "Bills Bills Bills" and "Bug A Boo" memorable for their insouciance, and deft, hardcore harmonies. Writer/producer Missy Elliot also puts in her several thousand dollars-worth on "Confessing", a low-key love groove. Though teenagers when they recorded this album, Destiny's Child sing convincingly of faithless lovers, e-mail stalkers, and extra-marital temptation, complete with cod-Shakespearean quotes. They also do a gospel version of "Amazing Grace", letting their voices buck and weave a cappella. Apart from a few less than enthralling ballads, it¹s an engaging, sassy mix. -Lucy O'Brien.
