Review Clifford: Symphony 1940; Bainton: Symphony in Dm No2 / Chandos:The strand that connects all three composers on this characteristically bold Chandos release is Australia. Hubert Clifford (1904-59) and his good friend John Gough (1903-51) hail from Victoria and Tasmania respectively (and both, spookily enough, ended up in London working for the BBC),whereas Englishman Edgar Bainton (1880-1956) emigrated to Sydney in 1934 to take up the directorship of the New South Wales State Conservatory. Of the two large-scale symphonies so eloquently realised here by Vernon Handley and the BBC Philharmonic, Bainton's second of 1939-40 is perhaps the more striking. Some 27 minutes in duration, it's cast in a single movement made up of a dozen sections. Fortunately, the symphonic argument is easily grasped, and Bainton's unfailingly evocative and imaginative scoring falls most gratefully on the ear. Clifford's Symphony 1940 is impressive too, though its bitter-sweet lyricism and unashamedly epic demeanour unavoidably prompt comparisons with Walton's masterly first symphony of a few years previous (next to which it seems like pretty small fry). Gough's miniature Serenade (written in 1931 for Clifford's wedding) forms a toothsome bonne bouche between the two main courses. Terrific Chandos sound complements the outstandingly sympathetic music-making. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Elgar / Payne - The Sketches for Symphony No. 3 / Anthony Payne:Yet another Naxos big-hitter, presenting an interpretation which, in its clear-sighted control, lean urgency and fractionally more objective manners, marvellously complements Sir Andrew Davis's bestselling world premier recording on NMC. With Paul Daniel extracting some of the most accomplished playing heard from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in many a month (and what a boon, by the way, to have the first and second violins so helpfully divided across the sound-stage), it's a performance to well and truly nail the weary old adage that Elgar's twilight invention somehow didn't do him justice at all. Timing-wise, the only eye-catching statistic comes in the "Allegretto" second movement, which Daniel dispatches over a minute quicker than Davis. As a result, the music perhaps takes on more of the character of a conventional scherzo rather than the incidental intermezzo it is under Davis. The glorious slow movement here resounds with an ideal combination of imposing defiance and tender vulnerability. The finale, too, is a terrific success, better held together than Davis's (and the concluding measures are handled with exceptional perception). Boasting really clear, excitingly wide-ranging engineering (the work of that highly-respected sound guru, Tony Faulkner), this deserves to sell by the bucket-load. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 41 & 40 / Deutsche Grammophon:Leonard Bernstein's self-consciously Romantic approach to Mozart is not to all tastes, but the playing here is so beautiful that it really disarms criticism. In truth, there's nothing particularly mannered about the interpretations, and the music moves along in good time. Given the proliferation of Mozart on authentic instruments, this sort of rich, yummy string sound comes as something of a shock, but it's certainly a pleasant one! -David Hurwitz.

Review Bruckner: Symphony No.8 / Wiener Philharmoniker:Bruckner's mighty Eighth Symphony is not a work usually associated with Pierre Boulez, yet in this wonderfully mastered live recording (from the cathedral in which Bruckner is buried) his incisive approach provides a masterful account. The performance is well paced and the faster speeds he chooses (unusually fitting the work onto a single disc) give momentum to the large four-movement structure. Alongside Boulez's hallmark clarity of texture, this makes for a less exhausting experience than performances by the previous generation of conductors, though many will still prefer the heightened gravitas of Wand and Karajan. The slow movement contains some of Bruckner's most perfect music and the unprecedented accuracy and buoyancy Boulez brings to the underlying rhythmic pulse of the opening is matched at other times by uncharacteristically indulgent rubato, with Boulez revelling in what he describes as "wonderful, labyrinthine harmonic language". The Vienna Philharmonic, whose sound is unrivalled in this music, responds magnificently to Boulez's demands and there is an obvious mutual respect between conductor and orchestra in this meeting of two very different traditions. This disc comes most highly recommended both as a good introduction to this symphonic masterpiece, or as a refreshing tonic for seasoned Brucknerians. -Leigh Aspin.
