Review Time Traders / Peter Splinter Group Green:Considering the congenial, journeyman-like figure he cuts on Time Traders, ex- Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green went on a long, strange trip to this point. Having made the Mac huge with "Albatross", Green suffered a crisis of conscience, demanded the band give away most of their earnings to starving African children and when they refused, quit the band. He went on to suffer from schizophrenia before finding mid-nineties rehabilitation with the combo he fronts here-returning to his British blues roots. There's little for lovers of fusion or the avant-garde to chew on in Time Traders. Mostly, it's a 21st-century rehash of a 1960s retread of a 1930s genre. These tracks are generally penned by band members Peter Stroud, Nigel Watson and pianist Roger Cotton, wandering down familiar blues highways and alleyways and-in the case of "Downsize Blues"-chiming in with a bit of rueful, middle-aged humour. Green contents himself with some deft but unprepossessing solo work, which is a shame, as his one contribution-the slow-flowing, "Albatross"-esque "Underway"-is probably the most mind and genre-expanding track on the album. -David Stubbs.

Review Super Session / Mike Bloomfield & Al Kooper:Nothing on this 1968 album approaches the best work of any of the three principals involved (Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills). What's more, Super Session sounds hopelessly mired in 1968. On the other hand, it's one of the original, groovy jam-rock statements, a spontaneous session filled with enjoyable but dispensable noodling. The first half showcases Bloomfield's piercing, edgy guitar on three blues instrumentals and one modal-jazz extravaganza. The cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Man's Temptation" falls into comic-relief territory, however. Stills and Kooper engage in a countrified Dylan cover and a rambling 11-minute version of Donovan's "Season of the Witch". The album's appeal and its ultimate downfall lie in the impromptu, thrown-together vibe. -Marc Greilsamer, Amazon. com.

Review No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Unledded / Page & Plant:Fourteen years of speculation from their fans and occasional sniping between the two former members ended when Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin reconvened their former musical partnership to produce No Quarter. Having long resisted offers from MTV to reform to do an Unplugged show, they finally accepted as part of a deal that also allowed them to visit Morocco to record new material. The album combines the results of both of these projects. The Led Zeppelin material features new arrangements and new instrumentation, including strings, Egyptian musicians and the haunting vocals of British-Asian star Najma Akhtar. The selection of songs is notable for including some of their lesser-known classics and all of the re-arrangements are well thought-out and executed. "Nobody's Fault But Mine" and "No Quarter" are almost completely revamped, and the latter in particular sounds terrific. The four new tracks are not always fully developed as songs-the three recorded with native musicians in Morocco, of which "Yallah" is a highlight, appear to be tantalising fragments of longer jams. Nevertheless, they are always interesting. The fourth track, "Wonderful One", is a moving ballad on which Plant's voice, which throughout the album appears better than ever before, gets yet another chance to shine. -James Swift.
