Review Electric Ladyland [VINYL] / Jimi Hendrix Experience:If it's true that songwriters have a vision in their head of what their dream album would be, Electric Ladyland was the project Jimi Hendrix hoped would be as close to perfection as possible. No longer content with the rush-recorded psychedelic pop-rock of Experienced and Axis, Ladyland was an exploration of what could be achieved with time, money and experience. Jimi's soul roots from his session days shine through for the first time with the laid-back groove of the title track and the doo-woppy "Long Hot Summer Night" showing a vocal style reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. It's hard to pick a standout piece as the quality of the album is so high, but the four-part dream segue of "Rainy Day", "1983", "Moon Turn the Tides" and "Still Raining" is a monumental piece of early prog rock continuing the acid-soaked ideal of extraterrestrials, love, peace and war that he started earlier on with "Third Stone from the Sun". However, it's not all spectacular drawn-out blues jams and sublime soundscapes, Electric Ladyland managed to produce Jimi's only UK No. 1 single, "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" plus the timeless classics "Crosstown Traffic" and "All Along the Watchtower" making it arguably the best studio album the Experience produced in their brief career together. -David Trueman.

Review Blow by Blow / Jeff Beck:His guitar-slinging contributions to the Yardbirds having dwarfed those of Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, Mrs. Beck's bad boy spent the next several years playing blues-rock (the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart), soul-rock (the second edition of that band), and leading a power trio. Then, he made this all-instrumental album, which was a huge 1975 success. Produced by George Martin, the nine-song session finds Beck fronting a keyboards-bass-drums outfit, augmented by some tastefully unobtrusive string arrangements. Call it a jazz-fusion album at your own risk. While Beck's playing is less in-your-face than his previous efforts, all the fierce attack, thick tone, microtonal bends, distortion, feedback, vibrato, sustain, sonic hoodoo, and rhythmic and harmonic creativity that the man's fans have come to know and love can be heard here. "Freeway Jam" boasts the most memorable melody and thus remains a Classic Rock staple to this day. "Cause We've Ended As Lovers"-written by Stevie Wonder-is Beck's gorgeous tribute to one of his own guitar-heroes, the now-deceased Roy Buchanan. -Don Waller.

Review The BBC Sessions / Rory Gallagher:The career of Irish blues guitar hero Gallagher was heavily documented by the BBC. This two-disc set is split between "in concert" and "studio" discs, featuring Rory's long-standing trio of Lou Martin (keyboards), Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Rod deAth (drums). It's the full cream, scooped up from a potential 10-hour tape-pile. The live disc displays the hurtling juggernaut that was the Gallagher gig norm, blues purity retained at rock distortion levels, fingers blurred and screaming as they fly over the frets. Lou Martin excels throughout, flaying boogie piano on "Country Mile" and squeezing the organ hard on "Roberta". Gradually, the subversive rumbling of deAth's bass drum impacts on the frontal lobes, the first disc programmed for steady acceleration, his foot-pedal beating faster and faster, until the whole band attains the continuous crescendo that is "Used To Be". All the while, Gallagher keeps up the tonal variety, constantly arriving at unexpected solo structures, mixing aggression with imagination. The studio disc seems slightly less frenzied after this, but reveals other facets, a gentler timbre to the axe. "They Don't Make Them Like You" adopts a jazzy lounge trundle, while "Daughter Of The Everglades" is a strangely psychedelic pop song, complete with hookline chorus, cranky fairground clavinet and heavily reverb-ed guitar solo. Play very loud! -Martin Longley.

Review Rock the Blues Tonight: Live in Canada 1970 / John Mayall:Rock the Blues Tonight is a collection of live performances recorded in Canada in the early 1970s. It largely features guitarist Harvey Mandel, bassist Larry Taylor and violinist Sugarcane Harris, whose improvised flights of fancy are a major reason to pick up this collection. Just about everybody gets extended solos, in fact; the set features a grand total of 14 tracks, which tells you how long the individual songs tend to run. While the sound quality isn't the best-according to Mayall's brief liner notes, much of this material started out as bootlegs-there are some excellent moments here, with Mayall giving his musicians free rein to explore uncharted musical territory. -Genevieve Williams.
