Review Houseparty: Anthology / J Geils:The 38 tracks on the two-CD set, "The J. Geils Band Anthology," were arranged out of chronological order so the first 10 songs on the second disc could all be live recordings. Those songs give you a good sense of what the second set at a J. Geils show sounded like back in the days when the band was the most exciting blues-rock band in the land. On stage, the sextet would expand the boundaries of the blues to include everything from Stax and Motown to jackhammer rhythms and screaming solos, and that roadhouse party attitude carried over into a series of hit studio recordings. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review Me and Mr. Johnson [VINYL] / Eric Clapton:Amazingly, given his weighty reputation as a blues guitarist, Eric Clapton has previously released only one all-blues collection in a solo career spanning 30 years. That album, 1994's From the Cradle, may have topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, but Clapton certainly betters it with this interpretation of 14 Robert Johnson classics. The reason for this is primarily in the vocals. Clapton's voice has always been too soft, too undamaged to convincingly tell such tales of woe. Now though, veteran of various personal catastrophes, he can give a fair impression of a man who has seen too much. Surrounded by an impressive musical team including Andy Fairweather Low and Billy Preston, with Jerry Portnoy playing a blinder on blues harp, Clapton delivers a deep, pulsing "When You Got a Friend", a searing "Little Queen of Spades", a boogilicious "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and a bucking "They're Red Hot". "Come on in My Kitchen" and "Me and the Devil Blues", meanwhile, are tough acoustic efforts, more in keeping with the legend of Johnson at the crossroads at midnight. Clapton fans will love this-it's his best in ages. -Dominic Wills.

Review Blow by Blow / Jeff Beck:His guitar-slinging contributions to the Yardbirds having dwarfed those of Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, Mrs. Beck's bad boy spent the next several years playing blues-rock (the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart), soul-rock (the second edition of that band), and leading a power trio. Then, he made this all-instrumental album, which was a huge 1975 success. Produced by George Martin, the nine-song session finds Beck fronting a keyboards-bass-drums outfit, augmented by some tastefully unobtrusive string arrangements. Call it a jazz-fusion album at your own risk. While Beck's playing is less in-your-face than his previous efforts, all the fierce attack, thick tone, microtonal bends, distortion, feedback, vibrato, sustain, sonic hoodoo, and rhythmic and harmonic creativity that the man's fans have come to know and love can be heard here. "Freeway Jam" boasts the most memorable melody and thus remains a Classic Rock staple to this day. "Cause We've Ended As Lovers"-written by Stevie Wonder-is Beck's gorgeous tribute to one of his own guitar-heroes, the now-deceased Roy Buchanan. -Don Waller.

Review 461 Ocean Boulevard / Eric Clapton:Predictably, given the drug problems which preceded its release, Clapton's second solo album proper seems to come and go in an opium haze of its own making. Oddly though, it suits him. As the history of rock attests, if you're going to get into one hard drug then you may as well make it heroin. Whereas cocaine feeds the ego and destroys judgement, heroin sublimates it and allows the artist to regress into his music. Which pretty much describes where 461 Ocean Boulevard is at. Because tracks like "Steady Rollin' Man" and US chart topper "I Shot The Sheriff" sound like they have all the time in the world, they make light work of putting the listener in a similar frame of mind. Best of all though is "Let It Grow", for many the kind of tender, foetal balladry which finds Clapton at his most quintessential. Inevitably, he cleaned up his act and sporadically attained similar heights. But for sheer mood and sense of moment, 461 Ocean Boulevard remains his masterpiece. -Peter Paphides.
