Review Experience Hendrix [CASSETTE] / Jimi Hendrix:Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect-like that of all Hendrix's best records-is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. -Rickey Wright.

Review Reaching the Cold 100 / Peter Green:With a title taken from a Robert Johnson song, Peter Green-the former founder member of Fleetwood Mac-has created a fresh set of tracks on Reaching the Cold 100 that are true to the spirit of early blues. Although Green was reclusive for years after becoming a 1960s drug casualty, BB King once said that he was the only white guitarist who ever sent shivers up his spine. Since 1996 Green has been playing again and this album resonates with new-found confidence and laid-back humour. With a group that includes smoky Hammond player Roger Cotton and guitarist Nigel Watson, Green sings about the hassles and mundanities of life as well as love and high living. The bathos of "Legal Fee Blues", for instance, is contrasted with the soulful sweetness of the ballad "Don't Walk Away from Me". At times he is a touch corny (rhyming "fire" with "desire", for instance), but this album has enough driving grooves to make it swing. -Lucy O'Brien.

Review Me and Mr. Johnson [VINYL] / Eric Clapton:Amazingly, given his weighty reputation as a blues guitarist, Eric Clapton has previously released only one all-blues collection in a solo career spanning 30 years. That album, 1994's From the Cradle, may have topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, but Clapton certainly betters it with this interpretation of 14 Robert Johnson classics. The reason for this is primarily in the vocals. Clapton's voice has always been too soft, too undamaged to convincingly tell such tales of woe. Now though, veteran of various personal catastrophes, he can give a fair impression of a man who has seen too much. Surrounded by an impressive musical team including Andy Fairweather Low and Billy Preston, with Jerry Portnoy playing a blinder on blues harp, Clapton delivers a deep, pulsing "When You Got a Friend", a searing "Little Queen of Spades", a boogilicious "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and a bucking "They're Red Hot". "Come on in My Kitchen" and "Me and the Devil Blues", meanwhile, are tough acoustic efforts, more in keeping with the legend of Johnson at the crossroads at midnight. Clapton fans will love this-it's his best in ages. -Dominic Wills.
