Review Padlock on the Blues / John Mayall:John Mayall can't get no respect, if "Always a Brand New Road" off of Padlock on the Blues is any indication. The autobiographical song makes mention of what most Mayall fans already know-his not inconsiderable talents have been eclipsed by the much more prominent successes of former Bluesbreakers like Peter Green, Mick Taylor, and Eric Clapton. But Mayall doesn't let it get him down-nor should he. This time around, he's got Joe Sublett playing sax, Tommy Eyre on organ, Buddy Whittington on guitar, and even guest spots from John Lee Hooker on "Somebody's Watching" and "Bad Dream Catcher. " Then there's Mayall's own skills on piano and harmonica; if his vocals-never his greatest strength-leave something to be desired, he more than makes up for it as an instrumentalist. Just listen to the piano solo on "Dancing Shoes," or the excellent harp work on "Always a Brand New Road. " The piano opening of the title track is eerily reminiscent of the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me," at least until it slams into as satisfying a slow blues as one could wish for. There's something nourishing about Mayall's brand of blues, and Padlock definitely satisfies. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Time Traders / Peter Splinter Group Green:Considering the congenial, journeyman-like figure he cuts on Time Traders, ex- Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green went on a long, strange trip to this point. Having made the Mac huge with "Albatross", Green suffered a crisis of conscience, demanded the band give away most of their earnings to starving African children and when they refused, quit the band. He went on to suffer from schizophrenia before finding mid-nineties rehabilitation with the combo he fronts here-returning to his British blues roots. There's little for lovers of fusion or the avant-garde to chew on in Time Traders. Mostly, it's a 21st-century rehash of a 1960s retread of a 1930s genre. These tracks are generally penned by band members Peter Stroud, Nigel Watson and pianist Roger Cotton, wandering down familiar blues highways and alleyways and-in the case of "Downsize Blues"-chiming in with a bit of rueful, middle-aged humour. Green contents himself with some deft but unprepossessing solo work, which is a shame, as his one contribution-the slow-flowing, "Albatross"-esque "Underway"-is probably the most mind and genre-expanding track on the album. -David Stubbs.
