Review Silver Tones: The Best of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers / John Mayall & The Bluesbreaker:Something of an elder statesman of British blues, John Mayall is generally known as the guy who gave Eric Clapton his big break. However, compilations like Silver Tones highlight the best of Mayall's work and show why he deserves a place in the pantheon in his own right. His skill at several instruments more than makes up for his average vocal abilities, and if he's primarily known as a bandleader, there's a great deal to be said for providing the proving ground for musicians like Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Fleetwood. Silver Tones is rife with strong material, from the up-tempo smoothness of the opening "Mail Order Mystics" to the nice, slow shuffle of "I Could Cry" to the rock-out groove of "Ain't No Brakeman. " "I Don't Mind" showcases some excellent piano work, and "Fan the Flames" finishes things off with a bang. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Sanctuary / Charlie Musselwhite:Harmonica giant Charlie Musselwhite has evolved from stone traditionalist to blues experimentalist in recent years, with excursions into Tejano, country, and jazz. In Sanctuary, with the help of Blind Boys of Alabama producer John Chelew, the 60-year-old has made a masterpiece that balances his music's Delta soul with sonic innovation. Musselwhite's world-weary singing is perfect for the haunting textures that the scraped and bell-toned guitar strings bring to "Train to Nowhere" and Randy Newman's "Burn Down the Cornfield", songs where the fog of danger hangs in the air like ectoplasm. Slide-guitar guests Sonny Landreth and Ben Harper bring rippling energy to the bad-luck story "Shootin' for the Moon" and the Harper-penned, spiritual "Homeless Child". And the Blind Boys' zesty old-time harmonies turn Musselwhite's biographical "I Had Trouble" into a gospel-tent confession. But, if the voice of God appears anywhere, it's in Musselwhite's always lush and mesmerising harmonica. -Ted Drozdowski, Amazon. com.

Review Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight / Jimi Hendrix:In 1970, Jimi Hendrix returned to the country where he'd skyrocketed to fame and gave his first performances in almost two years when he headlined the Isle of Wight festival. Sadly, it was also to be his last major public appearance: less than three weeks later, he would be dead. Blue Wild Angel is a double-CD complete release of Hendrix's set at the festival, a warts-and-all recording that reveals a guitar legend in good humour, yet restlessly exploring the broader musical directions he'd just laid down on sessions for what would become First Rays of the New Rising Sun (initially released posthumously as Freedom). Backed by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band of Gypsies bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix ranges from the improvisatory cacophony of "Machine Gun" and reworkings of his standard blues work-outs "Red House" and "Hey Joe" to renditions of "Dolly Dagger", "Ezy Rider", "Freedom" and "Hey Baby"! that trade on the more rhythmic R&B and jazz influences he'd diligently worked into his music. At times jagged, and straining the limitations of the trio format (Hendrix had publicly mused about working with a big band shortly before his death), it's nonetheless a passionate, intriguing clue as to Hendrix's true ambitions and potential beyond his initial hype and stardom. -Jerry McCulley.

Review Continental Drif [Us Import] / Charlie Musselwhite:Charlie Musselwhite's is the voice of experience. One can hear it on every note of Continental Drifter, where the relaxed feel of the experienced bluesman is evident in the main harmonica riff of "Little Star" and the smooth, Delta-style guitar of "Blues Up the River. " Several of the songs have a strong Cuban-Brazilian feel, and Musselwhite is joined on several of these by friend Eliades Ochoa and his band, Cuarteto Patria. Musselwhite's primarily known as a harmonica player, and it's easy to hear why on this album; whether he's spicing up the Cuban-blues mix of "Sabroso" or soloing over the jumpy rhythm of "Can't Stay Away from You," he's always bang on the note. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Slowhand / Eric Clapton:Clapton had already established himself as a guitar legend by the time he released Slowhand. His heroin habit long behind him, Clapton's songwriting mastery was fully evident on the album, particularly in the stunning ballad "Wonderful Tonight". It fully actualised all of the potential hinted at in his earlier "Promises", and Clapton trusted himself enough to slow things down. Some of his most expressive guitar work can be found throughout this album, not just within "Wonderful". Ironically enough, Slowhand is probably best known for the hit "Cocaine"-built upon a simple repeated riff, the song had Clapton's trademark smooth voice with its wear around the edges, and yet another stellar guitar solo. Flashy runs and licks were never the most integral part of Clapton's catalogue, his blues background being the primary source for his sound. Slowhand, with its phrasings, both guitar and vocal, established Clapton as the possessor of one of the most extensive vocabularies in rock. -Steve Gdula.

Review Electric Ladyland: Remastered / Jimi Hendrix:If it's true that songwriters have a vision in their head of what their dream album would be, Electric Ladyland was the project Jimi Hendrix hoped would be as close to perfection as possible. No longer content with the rush-recorded psychedelic pop-rock of Experienced and Axis, Ladyland was an exploration of what could be achieved with time, money and experience. Jimi's soul roots from his session days shine through for the first time with the laid-back groove of the title track and the doo-woppy "Long Hot Summer Night" showing a vocal style reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. It's hard to pick a standout piece as the quality of the album is so high, but the four-part dream segue of "Rainy Day", "1983", "Moon Turn the Tides" and "Still Raining" is a monumental piece of early prog rock continuing the acid-soaked ideal of extraterrestrials, love, peace and war that he started earlier on with "Third Stone from the Sun". However, it's not all spectacular drawn-out blues jams and sublime soundscapes, Electric Ladyland managed to produce Jimi's only UK No. 1 single, "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" plus the timeless classics "Crosstown Traffic" and "All Along the Watchtower" making it arguably the best studio album the Experience produced in their brief career together. -David Trueman.
